This week we have a vocabulary challenge. We have been locked out of the classroom and we need to get back in before Miss Stewart realises we have gone! Solve the clues to reveal the 10 digit code to unlock the door.
Things you will need to know:
Homophone: two words that sound the same but are spelt differently and have different meanings eg. hear/here
Adverb: describing the verb eg. quietly walked
Modal verb: the possibility of the verb eg. could walk
Prefix: added to the beginning of a word eg. sub-
Passive voice: when the subject of a sentence has something done to it by someone/something eg. The mouse was being chased by the cat.
Formal language: words you would find in books and information texts eg. capture rather than grab
Parenthesis: also known as brackets
Synonyms: words with the same meaning eg. damp/moist

Quick, get back in the classroom as quick as you can! Keep smiling… Mrs Etheridge.

This week Year 4 are continuing their learning on prefixes and Year 5 on suffixes. There is an activity for each year group and you can complete this by either printing off the sheet or writing the words and sentences in the back of your English book. There are also some activities on Education City for you to complete. Well done to those who have done this already. These activities are short and fun and will give your mums, dads and carers 10 minutes to have a quiet cup of tea!! You can play them more than once and the pass rate is 80% so if you don’t get 80% give it another go. I will leave each activity on for 2 weeks so there is plenty of time to give last weeks activity a go to. Keep smiling, Mrs Etheridge.

Year 5

Spelling Y5 27.04.20

As part of our recapping of the spellings from this year I thought it would be a nice idea to use the format we use in class. I have explained the spelling rule at the top and then some examples for you to change/adapt according to the rule. Underneath are some ‘clozed’ sentences (these are sentences with words missing – helping us the develop our vocabulary level and understanding/meanings of words.) You can ask an adult to print out the sheet, or if you do not have a printer at home simply copy the sentences into your English book. Don’t forget there are also some activities on Education City. Keep smiling, Mrs. Etheridge.

Spelling-Menu-Grid

Here are your spelling activities for this week. We are recapping spellings that we have already looked this year and therefore you are going to be spelling experts!! I have included a Spelling Grid, which gives you lots of ideas of ways to practise spellings. You can use these fun activities at any point in the week. Please practise the spelling patterns and copy the sentences into the back of the English book you were given. I have also placed an activity on Education City for each year group. I will add to this each week and you will be able to play games or complete a task to help you with your spelling rule. Keep smiling! Value

Courage

Courage is not the absence of fear, but the willingness to overcome that fear.”
Nelson Mandela

Thought of the Day

Being courageous can mean different things to different people. For example, one person may think it easy to speak in front of a large audience, whilst another would need to find lots of courage to do this. Everyone faces challenges from time to time, and we have to find courage to overcome them.
Talk together about:
• The different challenges that each family member faces
• Who or what helps us find courage?
• Is there someone that we admire because of the courage that they have shown?
